12:00 PM - 1:00 PMChicago Loop Synagogue, 16 S. Clark

A thousand years ago, the most perfect edition of the Hebrew Bible was written. It was kept safe through one upheaval after another in the Middle East, and by the 1940s it was housed in a dark grotto in Aleppo, Syria. By this point, it had become known around the world as the Aleppo Codex. Journalist Matti Friedman's authentic detective story traces how this precious manuscript was smuggled from its hiding place in Syria into the newly founded state of Israel. The story also explores how and why several of its most sacred and valuable pages went missing. It's a tale that involves grizzled secret agents, pious clergymen, shrewd antiquities collectors, and highly placed national figures who, would defy all odds and norms to get their hands on an ancient, decaying book. The story also reveals are uncomfortable truths about greed, state cover-ups, and the fascinating role of historical treasures in creating a national identity. It is our hope that you will take a moment to read this lovely book and join us for a lively discussion. Book Club leaders are volunteers and book suggestions are welcome. Don't forget to register. If you would like to reserve a kosher boxed lunch, call the synagogue office two days prior to place your order. Lunch is available for $15.00 per meeting.
